Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at St Michael’s

At St Michael’s, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision sets the foundation for lifelong learning in a nurturing, safe, and stimulating environment. We are proud to offer an inclusive, child-centred approach that ensures every child thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.

An Exceptional Start to Learning

Our EYFS curriculum is meticulously designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning. Through a balance of structured teaching and child-initiated play, we deliver engaging activities that build on each child's interests and abilities. This ensures strong progress in all areas of development, from communication and language to physical development and personal, social, and emotional growth. The curriculum is structured to progress throughout the year to ensure a settled start and a preparedness for the next stage in the children’s school journey.

Adult-led curriculum

Our structured teaching sessions are well-structured, active and inspiring. Each lesson takes into account the starting points of the class and provides them the essential building blocks to progress their learning. Teaching Is adapted to challenge each child and scaffold learning where appropriate. Children are provided the vital skills to access all areas of the curriculum and to inspire them to expand upon their learning in child-initiated learning.

Child-initiated learning

Our play-based curriculum is designed to develop learning and social skills. Continuous provision is a blend of readily accessible resources and carefully planned activities which encourages children to follow their individual interests and to try new things. Staff are trained to engage with each child and expand upon their learning. We see every child as unique and tailor activities to inspire learning through the interests of each child. Provision is developed, changed and adapted throughout each week to reflect the new skills, interests and knowledge of the class.

Highly Skilled and Dedicated Staff

Our passionate and well-trained EYFS team creates an environment where children feel valued and supported. With expertise in early childhood education, our staff develop strong relationships with each child, fostering confidence and independence. High expectations and individualised support help every child reach their full potential.

An Inspiring Learning Environment

The EYFS setting at St Michael’s is purpose-built to encourage exploration and discovery. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are thoughtfully equipped with high-quality resources that engage children in meaningful learning experiences. From sensory areas to imaginative role-play zones, every corner is designed to ignite creativity and develop essential skills.

Partnerships with Families

We believe in the importance of working closely with parents and carers to ensure children feel secure and confident. Regular communication, workshops, and shared learning experiences create a strong home-school partnership, allowing families to celebrate their child’s achievements and be actively involved in their learning journey.

Pre-School Links

St Michael’s Pre-School is on-site and plays a vital role in preparing children for their transition to primary school. Children from the pre-school regularly visit our EYFS setting to take part in shared activities, explore the learning environment, and become familiar with the staff and routines. These visits ensure a seamless transition, helping children feel confident, secure, and ready to thrive when they join St Michael’s.

Outstanding Outcomes for Every Child

At St Michael’s we pride ourselves on ensuring that every child makes excellent progress, regardless of their starting point. Our rigorous assessments and tailored interventions enable us to provide the right support at the right time. As a result, our children leave the EYFS as confident, well-rounded individuals, ready to succeed in the next stage of their education.
